The second novels focus, shifts away from the central motif of magic being embedded within the chocolate, and takes its interests in more typical methods such as written spells and ancient Aztec symbols. It was almost as if you could taste the magic on the tip of your tongue. I read the original novel many years ago, I even saw the movie adaptation to the novel and I loved every bit of both. The concept of a stable living lures her in, except Annie aka Anouk misses her old life back at Lasquenet, unable to leave Roux behind in the past, not only that but she also has a four year old sister, the father of whom remains a mystery. In this novel, however, we see her succumb to the inevitable power of the Kindly Ones, having left the French village Lansquenet-sous-Tannes, now she lives in the hub of Paris, amidst the cold hearted conservative Parisians in Montmartre.Īfter adopting a new identity for herself and her daughter Anouk, she decides she wants a ‘normal’ life, to abandon the magical life and settle down with her landlord Thierry who happens to have a thing for her. Settling from town to town, to country, she spreads magic through her mystical recipes via her chocolaterie. The second installment in Harris’ ‘Chocolat’ series, she continues her tale of Vianne Rocher who, travels from far and wide as she is chased by the wind.
